Our Terms and Conditions say what you agree to. This page says what we do — how the tutor behaves, what it will and won't discuss, and what happens when something is flagged. It's written for students and for the parents and teachers who want to know what a child is talking to.
What the tutor is for
Orimentis is a Socratic tutor for STEM subjects. It asks questions rather than handing over answers, because working something out is what makes it stick. It supports exam preparation (GCSE, A-level, BAC) and open-ended curiosity about how things work.
What the tutor will not discuss
Every message you send, and every reply the tutor writes, is checked before it reaches the other side. Five kinds of content are stopped:
- Self-harm and suicide. Handled differently from everything else on this list — see below.
- Hate speech, slurs, severe bullying and targeted harassment.
- Sexually explicit content. This is a space for students, and it is treated as such.
- Glorified violence and threats towards other people.
- Attempts to override the tutor's instructions — getting it to drop its safety rules, reveal how it is set up, or stop being a tutor.
When a message is stopped, the tutor says so plainly and invites you back to your work. It doesn't lecture you and it doesn't pretend nothing happened.
Studying difficult subjects is not the same thing
A lot of real coursework looks alarming out of context, and a filter that can't tell the difference is useless to a student. Ours is built to know that all of these are ordinary academic work:
- Biology: reproduction, cell death, dissection, parasites and predators
- Chemistry: acids, toxic substances, explosive reactions, the pharmacology of drugs
- Physics: nuclear reactions and radiation
- History: war, genocide, slavery, colonialism, political violence
- Literature: dark themes, characters who die, abuse depicted in a novel or a play
- Psychology: mental health conditions studied academically, trauma theory, stress
The line is not the topic. It's whether someone is describing their own intent, or asking for instructions to do real harm, rather than studying the subject.
If you tell us you're struggling
Messages about self-harm or suicide are the one category we treat as urgent rather than as a rule being broken. If one is detected:
- The tutor stops and does not answer the question as though it were coursework.
- You are shown crisis support lines for the UK, Romania and internationally — free, confidential, and available now.
- The message is flagged for a human on our team to review.
- You are not in trouble. Nothing about this counts as a violation of our terms, and nothing about it can lead to your account being suspended.
Two things we want to be straight about. We are not a crisis service and cannot provide one: no one is monitoring the product in real time, and a message here will not reach a person at the moment you send it. And we do not automatically contact your school, your parents or the emergency services on the strength of something you typed. If you need someone now, please use one of the lines the tutor shows you.
What we ask of you
The acceptable-use rules live in ourTerms and Conditions: use the service for learning, don't try to bypass the tutor's safety instructions, don't use bots, don't share your account, don't use it for anything illegal.
What happens if those rules are broken
A blocked message is not a punishment — it's a filter doing its job, and nothing follows from it on its own. What happens next depends on the pattern rather than on a single message:
- Most of the time, nothing. The message doesn't go through, and you carry on studying.
- Flagged messages are reviewed by a person on our team, who can mark them as a false positive — which is often what they are.
- Repeated, deliberate violations can lead to suspension. A suspension logs you out everywhere and stops you signing back in.
Suspensions are decided by a person, not by the filter: nothing in the product suspends an account automatically. They are indefinite rather than fixed-length, and they are reversible — we can lift one, and we will if we got it wrong. If you think we have, write to us athello@orimentis.com.
What we don't do
- We don't read your conversations for entertainment. Access is limited to the safety review described above and to the quality work described in our Privacy Policy.
- We don't score, rank or profile you by how you behave.
- If you share progress with a parent or guardian, what they receive is evidence of learning — not your messages. Nothing you type is passed on to them.
Changes to this page
If we change how any of this works, we'll update this page and note the date at the top.
