Ask them to explain it back
The surest test of real understanding is whether they can teach it to you. Ask them to walk you through what they worked on, and let them do the talking. If it’s solid, it comes out clearly.
Let the struggle sit
When they’re stuck, resist the urge to step in with the answer. Wrestling with a hard problem is where the learning actually happens. A little discomfort is the work, not a sign it’s going wrong.
Ask what clicked, not what they scored
Swap “did you finish your homework?” for “what finally made sense this week?” It keeps the conversation about understanding: the thing that lasts long after the grade is forgotten.
